Political Theater on Pacific Garden Mall
Commemorating the 61st Anniversary of the Nuclear Bombing of Hiroshima
Dismantling the Bomb/Constructing Peace
The Santa Cruz Weapons Inspection Team (SCWIT) invites the public
to participate with them in political theater at 12 noon on the
Pacific Garden Mall in front of O'Neill's to mark the 61st anniversary
of the U.S. nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.
From the first nuclear bombs that the U.S. dropped on Japan in
1945 to the deadly "depleted" uranium it deployed in
both Iraq wars, to the earth-penetrating "bunker busters"
it projects detonating in Iran, our nation has forged a multibillion
dollar business out of nuclear weapons technology. The largest
and most profitable designer, manufacturer, and merchant of those
weapons is Lockheed Martin, that operates a 4,400 acre facility
at the end of Empire Grade in Santa Cruz. Our Bonny Doon-based
Lockheed Martin facility manufactures and tests Contained Detonating
Fuses (CDFs) for the deadliest weapon ever made - the Trident
II D5 nuclear submarine missile.
Dismantling the Bomb/Constructing Peace expresses sorrow for
the full spectrum of victims of the nuclear weapons industry -
workers exposed to the hazards of producing weapons, communities
that suffer environmental degradation from their production, military
personnel who are poisoned by their use, and, of course, the human
and other living beings who are targeted by such weapons. On this
day we will honor those women, men, and children in Japan whose
lives and the lives of successive generations were shattered 61
years ago. This action also collectively imagines and calls for
alternatives to the nuclear weapons industry, alternatives that
convert the science of nuclear destruction into the science of
life-sustaining industries and renewable energy.
August 6, 2006 12 o'clock noon at the corner of Pacific and
Cooper

Political Action at the gates of
Lockheed Martin, Santa Cruz
to commemorate the 61st Anniversary of the
Nuclear Bombing of Nagasaki
March to Lockheed Martin*
The Santa Cruz Weapons Inspection Team (SCWIT) invites the public
to join the march to Lockheed Martin to mark the annihilation
and devastation delivered to the people of Nagasaki, targeted
on August 9, 1945, by nuclear bombs far less powerful than the
ones Lockheed Martin presently manufactures. The nonviolent action
will include delivering to Lockheed Martin the collective ideas
for conversion technologies generated by the people of Santa Cruz.

Vigil at Lockheed Martin, Bonny Doon
every second Thursday of the month.

When: 6:30 A.M. at the gates of Lockheed
Martin. Carpool from downtown Santa Cruz at the Old Sash Mill
(303 Potrero St.) 5:45 A.M. sharp. Carpools return to
Santa Cruz around 8 A.M.
Why: Since March 2003, we have been asking
Lockheed Martin to tell us what is being produced and/or tested
now in Bonny Doon. We also want to know the environmental effects
of its past and present projects there. Our nonviolent vigils
are intended to let Lockheed Martin know that we don't feel
safe as neighbors given the weapons it makes and the corporation's
record of environmental violations. We are not going away. We
want our questions answered.
Bring: a flashlight in the winter months.
Bring a sign that expresses your feeling about the work that
Lockheed Martin does and that might resonate with the folks
who are employed there.
